Documentary — Feature | 2025 | 84 min | Brazil

Director: Paulo Severo

Producers: Fernanda Abreu

Synopsis: The documentary’s starting point is the vast amount of previously unseen material captured on S-VHS video in 1995 by videomaker Paulo Severo during the recording of the album “Da Lata” by singer-songwriter Fernanda Abreu. This album, which crossed Brazilian borders, became acclaimed for its innovative aesthetic in its blend of electronic pop, samba, and Rio funk, becoming a watershed moment in the dance-pop music scene.

In addition to the previously unseen footage from the album recordings at Nas Nuvens and Discover studios in Rio de Janeiro, and the mixing at Studio Soul II Soul in London, the documentary features never-before-seen footage from the making of music videos, the album cover photoshoot by Walter Carvalho, the premiere of the “Da Lata” tour show at the iconic “Canecão” concert hall in Rio de Janeiro, and the show presented at the Montreux Festival.

Weaving together the documentary’s narrative are current testimonials from collaborators who participated in the 1995 “Da Lata” project, a musical and visual celebration.

Directed and edited by Paulo Severo, with coordination and general production by Fernanda Abreu and art direction by designer Luiz Stein (author of the original visual project for the “Da Lata” universe), the documentary aims, in addition to revealing the creative process of an innovative project, to reflect on the differences that have occurred in music production in the analog (1995) and digital (2025) eras, revealing the profound transformations that have taken place in the music industry over the last 30 years, contextualized within the social and cultural expression of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1995.
