Umbilina tells the misfortunes of its protagonist, Umbilina, a poor woman from the countryside, a widow and mother of ten children, nine of whom she lost to Death. When, recovering from illness, Umbilina is visited again by Death, this time she doesn’t expect that it is she who Death has come to take. For the safety of her last living son, José Maria do Ventrojesus, Umbilina will try to dissuade Death and delay this departure, at least until she can ensure the boy an honorable fate like those of the characters in cordel literature.
